Documentation
Everything you need to install Pramvex and get a verified answer.
Install
Download the installer for your platform from the download page and check its SHA-256. On Windows, run the installer. On a Mac, open the disk image and drag Pramvex into Applications. On Linux, make the AppImage executable and run it, or install the .deb with sudo apt install ./Pramvex_x.y.z_amd64.deb or the .rpm with sudo dnf install ./Pramvex-x.y.z-1.x86_64.rpm. Linux needs WebKitGTK 4.1 (Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, Fedora 38+ or equivalent).
Add documents
On first launch, choose Add folder and pick a folder. Pramvex reads PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), text and Markdown files in it and builds a local index. Progress is shown under Jobs. Files that can’t be read are listed with the reason.
Scanned PDFs go through on-device OCR automatically. Their results are marked OCR.
Search and ask
In Research, choose Exact to find a phrase, count matches or list files. Choose Ask to ask a question in plain language. Without a model, Ask shows the matching passages; with a model, it writes an answer with citations.
Set up local AI
Open Settings › Models. Pramvex recommends an answer model for your computer’s memory and offers the search model for meaning-based search. Nothing downloads until you click Download; each file is checked against a published SHA-256 before use.
Reading citations
Numbers in an answer link to the passages it used. Click one to open the evidence panel, which shows the file, the page or section, and the highlighted excerpt. From there you can open the original file. Claims the citation checker could not match are flagged rather than shown as verified.
Limits: a citation shows where a claim came from, not that the source is right or current. Pramvex only knows the documents you have added.
Compare and export
Use Compare to see what changed between two documents or versions, with citations to both, or to compare them topic by topic. Use Export on an answer, conversation or comparison to save it as PDF or Markdown.
Troubleshooting
- A file shows as failed. It may be password-protected, damaged or an unsupported format. The Jobs view shows the reason.
- Answers are slow. Choose a smaller model in Settings › Models, or use Exact mode for lookups.
- Windows shows a blue SmartScreen warning. The installer isn’t code-signed. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
- “No documents are indexed yet.” Add a folder, or wait for indexing to finish in Jobs.
- macOS says the app is damaged or can’t be opened. Pramvex isn’t notarized. Right-click it in Applications, choose Open, then Open again. If that fails, run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Pramvex.apponce. - The AppImage won’t start on Linux. Make it executable with
chmod +x, and install WebKitGTK 4.1 from your distribution if it is missing. The .deb and .rpm packages install it for you.
